El manatí del Caribe (Trichechus manatus) es una de las especies más emblemáticas de los ecosistemas acuáticos de Colombia. Estos mamíferos herbívoros habitan ríos, ciénagas y zonas costeras, donde cumplen un papel importante en el equilibrio de los ecosistemas.
Lamentablemente, los manatíes enfrentan diversos riesgos, como colisiones con embarcaciones, pesca accidental, pérdida de hábitat y contaminación de los cuerpos de agua.
En el Centro de Rescate de Fauna Marina operado por la Fundación Centro de Investigaciones Marinas del Caribe, especialistas trabajan diariamente para brindar atención médica, rehabilitación y seguimiento a estos animales cuando son encontrados en estado vulnerable.
Cada proceso de recuperación incluye evaluación veterinaria, alimentación especializada, monitoreo del comportamiento y preparación para su eventual retorno al medio natural.
Cuando un manatí logra ser liberado nuevamente en su hábitat, representa una gran victoria para la conservación de la biodiversidad del Caribe colombiano.
