El pez león (Pterois volitans) es una especie originaria del océano Indo-Pacífico que, en las últimas décadas, se ha convertido en una de las mayores amenazas para los ecosistemas marinos del Caribe.
Debido a la ausencia de depredadores naturales en esta región, su población ha crecido de forma acelerada. Cada hembra puede liberar miles de huevos, lo que facilita su rápida expansión en arrecifes y zonas costeras.
El problema radica en que el pez león es un depredador altamente eficiente que se alimenta de peces pequeños y juveniles, reduciendo la diversidad de especies en los arrecifes de coral.
Para enfrentar este desafío, la Fundación Centro de Investigaciones Marinas del Caribe promueve programas de control mediante la captura selectiva del pez león y campañas de educación ambiental.
Además, se fomenta su consumo responsable como alternativa sostenible para reducir su impacto en los ecosistemas marinos.
La participación de buzos, pescadores y comunidades locales es clave para proteger los arrecifes y preservar la biodiversidad del Caribe.
